Have you tried https://talkpal.ai/? It does all this automatically with a very nice interface and free... for the time being.

Good point Jimmy, I didn't mention that! In the Chrome browser you can click on the Extensions button (looks like a jigsaw piece on the right of the address bar), then 'Manage Extensions', and toggle button to 'off' for ChatGPT Voice Master. You can turn it off and on from here.

Or you can go to Settings/Extensions and do the same.

Hope this helps!

I've tried a number of ways like this but nothing seems to work well, all are clunky. I think using the addon to read the ChatGPT responses is good but 1. speech recognition won't work well to make for a turn taking conversational experience 2. Speech recognition will only work well enough with adv. level speakers given the language models used. Speak.com has partnered with OpenAI and received a lot of venture funding. Here in Korea, they already have good penetration, Japan next. It takes this same thing but makes it into an instantaneous experience plus they'll get better at it. https://techcrunch.com/2022/11/17/speak-lands-investment-from-openai-to-expand-its-language-learning-platform

Thanks for the comment David! I mentioned Speak.com in the article, it'll be fantastic once they open it up to more languages, and their plugin for ChatGPT is released.

As for the speech recognition, the addon I mentioned in the article is actually very good compared to others - surprisingly so! (It works for my Chinese, so it should work for anyone!). I tried a few, and most, as you say, weren't that capable.

Ah, went through all the steps but then got active using the plugin, didn't see your last comments. My bad. Using it, there is a learning curve to set up (barrier) but I still get ChatGPT not really acting like a conversation partner - could be my prompt or other things.

It is still a little clunky, and I've since found that it does respond differently at times, even with the same prompt. Still, I'm really excited - these are just the first steps! I can't wait to see what things will be like in six months or so.
